Ask anybody about Great Day in Elk and they start smiling and can't stop smiling. Then they start talking about it and they can't stop that either. It's wild. It's crazy. It's fun on stilts. It's old fashioned. It's soulful. It's historic. It's goofy. It's epic. It's corny. It's 100 percent community. It's exuberant. It's delicious. Actually, 'fun' doesn't come close to describing what's been happening on the grounds of the Elk Community Center for the last FIFTY years!
Scientists, divers, and fishermen are merging their knowledge and experience to help nature regain its balance after the tragic collapse of the coast's bull kelp forests and they are joined by a community that seeks to support and further their extraordinary work.
Diana Coryat and Loreto Rojas —journalists/filmmakers/teachers/podcasters/radio personalities—have been interviewing and recording oral histories of Latinos who arrived on the coast beginning in the 1950s, many around the same time Back-to-the-Landers also discovered the coast's allure.
